Simple recipes like this one are only possible when you use fresh, quality ingredients. The sweet and fragrant basil pairs perfectly with the juicy tartness of the tomato. The heirloom tomatoes I primarily use are Black Krim, which have an earthy salty bite. When my mom first tried black krim tomatoes, she closed her eyes and said “this is what tomatoes tasted like when I was a kid”.

Finish off this salad by drizzling aged balsamic vinegar over the tomatoes; you’ll get an amazing tang that seems almost smokey, which gives depth to the basil and tomatoes. By using a thick, quality balsamic vinegar, I don’t even bother adding any oil to this “dressing”…keep it simple to let the three ingredients shine. Feel free to also sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the tomatoes to really draw out the flavor.

Basil leaves

Heirloom tomato

Balsamic vinegar

Slice the heirloom tomatoes to your desired thickness.

Tear a few basil leaves over the tomatoes.

Drizzle about ½-1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar over the tomatoes.

Sprinkle with sea salt (if desired).

Serve outside on a sunny day, and enjoy!
