Last night was the season premier of Mad Men! Who else watched?! In honor of the show, I wanted to mix myself a cocktail straight out of the 1960s. Since I’m not a big drinker, I had to look at some pictures online for inspiration and thought an Old Fashioned looked cool. It also seemed simple enough to make with my novice bartending skills.
I followed the recipe listed on the Mad Men Cocktail Guide and cross checked it with the recipe on Drinksmixer.com. We didn’t have any of the ingredients in the house (other than sugar), so I ran to the store and dear god booze is pricey! Who knew? Probably everyone, but hey, what can I say…since college I haven’t hit up many liquor stores. Anyway, I started mixing, jumped on the couch all excited to see how the characters have grown since season 5, took a sip of my old fashioned cocktail, and consequentially gagged haha.
Clearly I’m no Don Drapper cause this drink was way too strong for my taste. I barely got down one sip. My parents cracked up cause I was leaning over the sink spitting up all the whiskey. Don’t get fooled by the cherry, orange, or lemon…an old fashioned is hardcore! But if you think you can share a drink with Don or Roger or any of the rest, try this out. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. :)
1 1/2 – 2 oz bourbon whiskey
2 dashed bitters
1 splash water
1 teaspoon sugar
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange wedge
1 lemon wedge

Try mixing up a sweeter version of an Old Fashioned!

Yeah, that might be coming up soon…apparently you can add sweet vermouth to ease up the flavor. Unless someone wants to take the giant jug of whiskey off my hands, I’ll just cook with it.
